Diversity Statement

Oxford Pride is committed to the principle and practice of Equal Opportunities and Diversity and will implement these practices in all our roles and activities. We believe that all of our activities should be accessible to all members of the community wherever possible, that none of our activities should ever intentionally cause distress to anyone using them and we shall in fact work hard to be as inclusive as possible. We aim to represent and celebrate the diverse and colourful array of our community and reflect this cross-section in our policy and decision-making and to continue to work hard within our community to promote acceptance and inter-community exchange and learning.

Pride in Brief

It was spring bank holiday 2002, and to celebrate the Queen’s golden jubilee, the Jolly Farmers and Castle Tavern held a street party on Paradise Street. There were barbecues, games, entertainment… and an absolutely huge number of people turned up, far more than expected. Several times during the day, various people were heard to remark that we had the makings of our own Pride festival in Oxford.

Once the dust had settled, the idea remained so we organised an open meeting and agreed to form a group to organise a yearly event … Oxford Pride was born.

The early meetings were a flurry of activity, writing the constitution, opening a bank account, but we got there in the end and on 3rd May 2003, Oxford saw its first ever Pride Event. Oxford City Council were with us from the start, supporting us in every way they could, like the use Oxpens Field and advice of their own events team. Also the local gay venues and press, including Fyne Times have always been there, sponsoring or supporting Oxford Pride.

Each year, Pride has got bigger and better: moving the event to July in 2005 proved to be a good, and (touch wood!) we’ve always had good weather. It became apparent, even in our first year, that Oxford Pride is a family event. As a result we have ensured that the day is designed to be enjoyed by every member, friend or family of the LGBT community.
